Dinagat Islands was part of the First
District of the province of Surigao del Norte until it became a separate
province in October 2, 2006 per Republic Act No. 9355 or the Charter of the Province of Dinagat Islands.
Dinagat
Islands is located in the northern part of Surigao del Norte. Politically, the
province is bounded on the North, starting from the desolation point, by
Surigao Strait; on the East by Philippine Sea; on the South-East by Dinagat
Sound; on the South by Gaboc Channel and Nonoc Island; on the South-West by
Awasan Bay, Hanigad Island and Hikdop Island; and on the West by Surigao
Strait.
The
Province of Dinagat Islands has a total land area of 96,745.85 hectares and is
composed of seven municipalities. The largest municipality in terms of land
area is Loreto with a total land area of 25,587 hectares (26%) and the smallest
municipality is Dinagat with a total land area of 3,287 hectares (3%).
The
DepED Division of Dinagat Islands, now on its fifth year in operation since its
charter last October 12, 2007 by virtue of R.A. 9355 has shown a continuous
improvement and support to its 108 elementary schools and 29 secondary schools
of which six (6) are newly opened high schools in this division.
In
August 14, 2008, ASDS Teofila G. Cabatuan appointed the 15 newly-created
personnel to man the DepED Dinagat Division. By August 20, 2008, ASDS Josita B.
Carmen took over as the officer-in-charge. Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was
signed by ASDS Carmen and ASDS Fidela M. Rosas transferring 645 elementary
personnel from Division of Surigao del Norte to Dinagat Islands Division.
After which an agency code was given by DBM on
November 2008. Division MOOE was downloaded direct to the division on December
14, 2009. Subsequently, on January 2009, division personnel and secondary
non-implementing units (IUs) personnel salary and MOOE were downloaded to
division account. SDS Carmen took the
lead to open new six secondary schools in 2009.
At
present, ASDS Romeo O. Aprovechar assumes into office as new designated Officer
In charge – Office of the Schools Division Superintendent on July 2010. In his
administration, six (6) elementary and (6) six secondary schools passed the
Accreditation Program for Public Elementary Schools (APPES) and Project
STERLING respectively. Just recently, the division received addition 21
teachers items for SY 2011-12 of which six (6) is for preschool teacher items, nine (9) teachers
item for elementary , and six (6) for secondary.
The
Division of Dinagat Islands is composed of eight (8) districts namely: Albor,
Cagdianao, Dinagat, Loreto, Rizal I, San Jose, and Tubajon. Since Municipality
of Basilisa has more number of schools situated in the islands, mainland and
coastline area, the district was divided into two (2) namely, Rizal I and Rizal
II last June 2010.
